James Corden was dressed to impress in a sharp wedding suit as he resumed filming for the much-anticipated final episode of Gavin and Stacey on Tuesday.

Hinting that a huge nuptials could take centre stage in the Christmas finale, the actor got back into character as Smithy as he prepared to film the scenes on the famous Barry Island in Wales.

Hinting that fans could finally get an answer to the proposal cliffhanger that ended the previous episode, the scenes will no doubt set tongues wagging that Smithy is the lucky groom set to tie the knot.

While these scenes could be a complete red herring, the surprise return of a former character may throw the big day into chaos, with Nessa’s former flame Dave Coaches also pictured in the scenes

Actor Steffan Rhodri made his last appearance in Gavin and Stacey at the end of the third series, when Nessa decided that she couldn’t go through with the wedding.

Dressed in his wedding finery, Steffan was pictured heading onto the set with Julia Davis, who plays Pam’s long-suffering best friend Dawn.

No doubt the best man on this occasion, Mathew Horne was suited and booted as the titular character Gavin Shipman, while Joanna Page was also dressed in a pretty dress for her role as Gavin’s wife, and Nessa’s longtime friend, Stacey.

Another new addition to the cast was Line Of Duty and Motherland star Anna Maxwell Martin, with details of her character yet to be revealed.

Much of the cast were seen grabbing lunch from a base unit on the set, with the wedding venue itself being kept a closely-guarded secret.

One character that was noticeably absent was Nessa, casting doubt on whether viewers will really see her and Smithy tie the knot after five years of speculation.

As the family gathered in Barry for the festivities back in 2019, the episode ended with Nessa down on one knee and the episode ended immediately after she asked: ‘Marry me?’

However it doesn’t look as though the pair have tied the knot, as Nessa (Ruth Jones) was seen without a ring on her wedding finger this week.

Dressed in her usual rock star chic ensemble, while the star wore rings on her other fingers there was no engagement ring present.

The pair had an on-off relationship during the series after several unplanned one-night stands led to their son, Neil the baby.

In the last episode, which caught up with the characters 10 years after the previous instalment, it was revealed they were successfully co-parenting their son.

It’s also been reported that the finale will see the return of Sheridan Smith as Smithy’s sister Rudi, with the actress spotted filming a surprise cameo.

The star played a larger than life character in series one and two of the hit show and was spotted filming their scenes over the weekend.

A source told The Sun the actress stepped right back in to Rudy’s shoes and it was ‘like no time had passed at all’.

The source added: ‘Sheridan was over the moon she could go back into the fold and her scenes are brilliant.’

It’s also been revealed that the cast are working on a behind-the-scenes programme to mark its final ever outing.

Corden and Ruth Jones have been recording it as they made the festive special in the Welsh seaside town of Barry Island last week.

Cameras followed them as they mixed with fans, posing for more than 100 selfies, capturing the interactions between the cast and their adoring public, who began arriving last Monday.

Joanna Page was also seen being trailed by a crew when she greeted fans. Sources on the set say that the footage is to be used to make a documentary about the much loved comedy series, which first launched on BBC Three in 2007.

One said: ‘When the cameras filming Gavin & Stacey stopped, other cameras went on to film the behind-the-scenes action. There was loads of lovely footage for the programme; it has been so special for its viewers.

‘James is astute and realises that there is a wonderful story to be told about the making of it and what goes on behind the scenes.’

An emotional Corden told fans: ‘It’s all overwhelming, the fact that it’s the last time we’ll be here on the island. It’s wonderful. It’s the home of the show. It’s the centre of it really, and every bit of it you’re thinking: “God, I remember when we were here.” ‘

On the first day of filming the cast shared a picture of a clapperboard with the caption: ‘The final episode of Gavin & Stacey started filming today. Truth be told, we’re a little bit excited.’

It will be the first episode of the BBC sitcom since the last Christmas special in 2019. That episode, which was watched by 12 million viewers, ended on a cliffhanger with Nessa down on one knee as she proposed to Smithy.

The pair eventually marry, while their respective best friends Smithy and Nessa have a son, Neil, who is now 15 and will also return for the final ever episode.
