Warning! Spoilers for The Rings of Power season 2, episode 5 ahead.

One of the most critical battles of the Second Age appears to finally be on the way in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2—and this is great news considering how long we have waited. The Prime Video series is the first on-screen adaptation of the Second Age, which means a lot of great moments from Middle-earth’s history are on the way. This was one of the primary points of excitement when Rings of Power was first announced back in 2019. Now, after five years, all this anticipation will finally pay off.

Rings of Power season 1 was a fair success for Amazon, but there were complaints regarding the pacing. This first installment was dedicated to setting the stage for the Second Age, with minimal grand events to make this series really feel like Lord of the Rings. However, the same cannot be said for season 2. The most recent episodes have been packed with excitement as Sauron’s plan finally unfolds. However, the ending of Rings of Power season 2, episode 5 hints that one of the Second Age’s most anticipated events is right around the corner.

The Rings Of Power Season 2, Episode 5 Directly Sets Up The Siege Of Eregion

The Orcs Are At Eregion’s Doorstep

Adar’s Orcs have been marching across Middle-earth for a couple of episodes now, but the ending of Rings of Power season 2, episode 5, finally sees this army arrive at the Elven city of Eregion. The last thing shown before the credits began to roll was the Orcs looking triumphantly out at the city they are planning to attack, indicating that the Siege of Eregion will pick up near the beginning of Rings of Power season 2, episode 6. In canon, this is the battle that starts Sauron’s war with the Elves, so it’s something Lord of the Rings fans have been eager to see play out for five years now.

In canon, the Siege of Eregion involved Sauron and his Orcs, but
Rings of Power
changed this to a battle initiated by Adar instead.

Why The Siege Of Eregion Is One Of The Second Age’s Most Important Battles

It All Starts With Eregion’s Downfall

A lot of time has been spent in Eregion in Rings of Power season 2 since this is the home of Lord Celebrimbor, who has been busy at work in his glorious forge crafting the Rings of Power. It’s been a real treat to see this Elven city on screen since it’s not one that existed during the events of The Lord of the Rings. This is because the battle teased by episode 5 will bring Eregion to its knees. It’s doomed to be destroyed, and the Elves will never again rebuild this once thriving city. In all, this is the event that demonstrates to the Elves that nothing in Middle-earth will ever be the same for them again.

The Siege of Eregion should open the floodgates for more important Second Age moments of Tolkien’s invention.

While there has been some action up to this point in Rings of Power, much of it has been based on Prime Video’s own creative liberties. This is the first truly canon event (though there are some changes), and the Siege of Eregion should open the floodgates for more important Second Age moments of Tolkien’s invention. After all, in canon, the fall of this city leads Elrond to establish Rivendell, which will continue to be a safe haven all the way through the War of the Ring. It’s an exciting moment that will lead to even more in the coming episodes—so buckle up.
